Tips for Protecting Yourself from Coronavirus Disease

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Together, we can play a big role in stopping the spread of this virus.

There is currently no vaccine available to prevent COVID-19, otherwise known as coronavirus disease 2019. As such the most prudent way to avoid the disease is to avoid exposure to the virus. With the rapid spread of illness, it is becoming increasingly important for everyone to take this virus seriously. In South Florida, more and more cases have been documented and projections point to the continual spread.

So, what can you do to protect yourself and your loved ones from the coronavirus disease? First, it is important to understand that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes that the virus is being spread from person-to-person in two potential ways:

  1. Respiratory droplets that are produced when an infected person sneezes or coughs
  2. Close contact between people (within about 6 feet of one another)

If the respiratory droplets of an infected individual land on the noses or in the mouths of others, they can be inhaled into the lungs and further spread the disease. It is extremely important that all South Florida residents understand the risks involved.

Taking proactive measures to protect yourself is essential. The CDC recommends doing the following:

  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Be particularly mindful of washing when you have been in any public places as well as after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
  • If unable to wash with soap and water, use hand sanitizer that has at least 60 percent alcohol
  • Avoid touching your face as much as possible and immediately wash hands if you have done so
  • Do not come in close contact with anyone who is sick
  • Practice social distancing as much as possible

In addition to protecting yourself, it is important to also think about protecting those around you. Follow these important steps to do so:

  • If sick, please stay home
  • If sneezing or coughing, use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth or the inside of your elbow if a tissue is not available
  • Dispose of all used tissues in the trash
  • Immediately (and properly) wash your hands after coughing or sneezing
  • Wear a facemask if you are sick when around other people
  • Disinfect and clear surfaces that are touched frequently
  • Clean any and all dirty surfaces

Together, we can play a big role in stopping the spread of this virus. As always, SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County is here for you!
