Preventing Mold from Growing in Your Shower

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

One of the biggest issues related to showers and mold growth is the fact that mildew can appear anywhere in the bathroom.

Mold growth occurs in many different places in a home, especially in a South Florida home. From heavy rains to humidity, outside factors can contribute greatly to potential mold growth. But what about inside of the home? Mold most commonly grows in area of the home where moisture is present, this typically means the kitchen and the bathroom. Even the cleanliest of people can neglect to keep their shower perfectly clean and eventually moisture will build, combined with humidity, and lead to mold growth.

One of the biggest issues related to showers and mold growth is the fact that mildew can appear anywhere in the bathroom, from the floors to the ceiling. In fact, ceiling mold is extremely common in bathrooms. Homeowners should take calculated steps to ensuring that their shower stays free from mold:

  • Keep your bathroom fan on while you shower
  • Consider using a dehumidifier in your bathroom
  • Replace your shower curtain regularly
  • Wash your bathroom rugs frequently
  • Clean your shower walls regularly, paying careful attention to the sealants areas

Mold has a tendency to grow quickly. A colony typically grows extremely fast when a mold spore is exposed to water. While there are a few quick fixes if you catch mold growth in your shower early on, the best strategy is to contact a mold remediation specialist. In many cases, the full presence of mold cannot be spotted without a professional eye.

At SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County, we have over 30 years of mold remediation and restoration experience. If your shower or bathroom area is suffering from a mold growth problem, we are here to restore your bathroom to its original state. Feel free to contact our North Palm Beach office at your earliest convenience to learn more about your options, our mold specialists are ready to help.

Signs of Mold Growth in Your Home

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

Due to their spores, mold can easily spread through the air, which also makes it very easy to multiply.

What is mold?

Mold is a fungus that serves to decompose dead organisms and substances. In nature, mold can breakdown plant and animal matter, such as soil, plants, food, and other materials found in nature.

Due to their spores, mold can easily spread through the air, which also makes it very easy to multiply. Spores from outside can enter the home through openings such as doors and windows, but also heating and air conditioning vents, clothing, shoes, and pets.

How does mold grow and how to stop it?

Once inside the house, mold needs a dark and humid environment to thrive. Additionally, some of the most common materials and surfaces that attract spores include fabrics, carpet, paper, and wood, if there is little light and moisture available. Therefore, mold is commonly found in places like the bathroom and the basement in spots like sinks, bathtubs, showers, leaky pipes, and windows.

The key to preventing mold growth is just controlling the amount of moisture in your home.  This includes cleaning up spills as soon as possible, drying out any wet materials, and keep the humidity level below 60%.

What are the signs of mold growth in your home?

Because mold likes to hide in these dark places, it is possible that you may not notice it right away. What starts as just a little spot can expand very quickly and can usually been seen or smelled.

Some of the most common signs of mold growth include:

  • Visible spots of growth that can be a wide range of colors from black to white to green or even spotted. The mold growth may appear to have a cotton, velvet, rough, or leathery texture.
  • Odors that are earthy and musty
  • A nearby source of moisture or signs of water damage (leaks, standing water, water stains, condensation, etc.)
  • Wallpaper or another surface is that are warped, cracked, or peeling

How do you get rid of mold in your home?

In some less severe cases, you can remove the mold in your home yourself with either commercial products, soap and water, or a solution of bleach and water. If you are going to remove the mold by yourself, you should open windows for ventilation, wear protective gear over your eyes, hands, and face and avoid mixing any other cleaners with bleach. After getting prepared, you can just use a brush to scrub mold off of the surface is until it is gone.

However, there are some cases where it is much safer to let a professional handle the mold removal. If there is a large amount of mold, you are unable to reach it, you have had severe water damage, or you are at a high risk from the symptoms of mold, it is best to seek a professional contractor.

At SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County we have over 30 years of experience in mold removal and mold remediation. Contact our mold damage experts today to learn more.

Seal and insulate garage door

To ensure your garage stays dry, it is important to properly seal and insulate your garage door. This includes removing any old weather stripped that may be tattered or damaged and checking the bottom of the garage door insulation for any signs of shrinkage and wear.

Install waterproof walls

Hotspots for Mold Growth in Your Home

6/3/2021 (Permalink)

Mold requires a dark, humid, and moist environment to grow, which can be found in many places around the house.

According to the documentary “Moldy”, the first ever documentary about toxic mold, 50% of all homes in the Unites States have mold related issues. Additionally, 28% of the population in the United States are genetically predisposed to mold-related health effects. Moldy demonstrated how mold is commonly found lurking in leaking roofs, incorrectly installed showers, and many other places within the home.

Mold requires a dark, humid, and moist environment to grow, which can be found in many places around the house. The best way to prevent mold grow is to be aware of the hotspots in your home and know how to prevent and treat the substance.

Here are the most common hotspots for mold growth in the home.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are definitely present some of the biggest risk for mold growth in your house. Due to excess amounts of moisture, levels of humidity, and insufficient ventilation, the conditions become very susceptible for mold to grow. The most common places in the bathroom include shower stalls, around bathtubs, and underneath and behind toilet tanks but can also be found on tiles, shampoo bottles, loofahs, shower curtains, or any place where water can pool.

Because most bathroom fans do not ventilate the room properly, you should try to leave the fan on for 20 minutes after a shower to prevent mold growth.

Kitchens

Similar to the bathroom, there are many places within the kitchen that has optimal conditions for mold growth, such as underneath kitchen sinks or refrigerators. Especially under the kitchen sink, residue from food and sponges can act for a catalyst for mold growth, in addition for plenty of moisture. Additionally, the fridge provides a place with food, water, and darkness where mold can easily grow. This mold can often be removed with some cleaner, but if the issue is not going away it may be a part of a bigger problem.

Carpeting

Carpeting in your home can easily capture and retain dirt, and with the combination of potential flooding or leaks, this can easily become a hotspot for mold in your home.

To avoid mold growth under carpeting, try to make sure your carpet is free of any excess moisture, has access to proper airflow, and that any potential leaks or spills are taken care of immediately. Unfortunately, if your carpet becomes invested with mold, it will likely need to be removed and replaces.

Air Conditioning Units

Mold growth is especially problematic in air conditioning and other ventilation systems because the air movement can easily spread the mold to other parts of your home. As the air conditioning works, moisture and dust are pulled into the machine, and with no access to light, it becomes a perfect place for mold to grow. If there is mold in your air conditioning unit, every time the unit is on it can blow tiny and invisible mold spores into the room, spreading it to other areas. This can be avoided by frequently cleaning and replacing the air filter in your unit.

Preventing Mold Growth in Your Shower

4/20/2021 (Permalink)

To keep every room in your house safe, clean, and healthy and prevent structural damage, it is absolutely crucial to take action steps to prevent mold

No matter what, every bathroom will accumulate moisture, which can eventually lead to mold. By reducing this moisture, you can reduce the chance of mold growth in your bathroom and especially shower. To keep every room in your house safe, clean, and healthy and prevent structural damage, it is absolutely crucial to take action steps to prevent mold growth.

Here some very easy steps to prevent mold growth in your shower:

Get an Effective Fan and Makes Sure it Works Properly

A working fan is the first step in preventing mold growth in your bathroom and shower. These fans work by sucking in moisture from the bathroom and sending it outside.  Make sure your fan is large enough to sufficiently cover the space of your bathroom. A good rule of thumb in deciding this is to multiply the square footage of the room by 1.1 if your ceiling is 8ft or 1.5 for 9ft. Additionally, you should run the fan during your shower and for a half an hour after to prevent any leftover moisture from growing mold.

Get Rid of Any Excess Water

To prevent the spread of mold or mildew before it starts, you should mop up any extra water as soon as possible. A great way to do this is with a squeegee, a tool with a flat, smooth rubber blade that is used to remove liquid on a flat surface. By just taking one minute to use a squeegee after a bath or shower, you can reduce the amount of moisture in your bathroom by 75%. This is a great way to reduce moisture and thereby prevent mold growth.

Fix all Leaks

Different from large pools of water, small leaks can build up over time that leads to ton of extra moisture. As soon as you notice a leak in your bathroom or shower, you should try to remedy the problem as soon as possible. Putting off these repairs can let this moisture build over time. Waiting to fix a leak will only lead to more problems in the long run.

Keep It Clean

As intuitive as it sounds, keeping your bathroom and shower clean is another way to prevent mold growth. You should regularly clean your bathroom to keep the room sanitary and mold-free. This also including cleaning the items within your shower. Places like the bottom of shampoo bottles can be a sneaky place for mold to grow.

At the end of the day, the best way to deal with mold in your shower is trying to prevent it from growing in the first place. This is done by reducing the potential of moisture to diminish any potential of mold growth.

Preventing the growth of mold is the best method, as it saves money and potential health effects.

If you are a homeowner in South Florida, dealing with mold growth in your bathroom is nothing new. With so much moisture in one small room, mold and mildew are nearly inevitable at one point or another. Mold can form virtually anywhere in a bathroom – from down in the tile all the way to the ceiling. Some of the most common areas for mold growth include:

  • Shower
  • Bathtub
  • Sink
  • Toilet

The dark, damp, and humid components of a typical bathroom make it the ideal location for mildew and mold to grow and thrive. In addition, bathrooms without proper ventilation are hubs for mold to flourish, as the moisture lingers and thus creates an ideal location for mildew to sprout. Bathroom rugs and carpets are also hotspots for mold to develop.

Shower mold growth is particularly common. If left untreated, it can develop into a costly issue for both your wallet and your health. Prevention is the key to stopping mold growth in your shower. Keep the following tips in mind for keeping your bathroom in top shape:

  • Wash bathroom rugs regularly
  • Use a mold-resistant shower curtain
  • Use the ventilation fan in the bathroom anytime the bath or shower is in use, as well as 30 minutes after bath/shower is finished
  • Try to keep the humidity level below 50 percent
  • Address any leaks right away
  • Squeegee your shower walls right after you shower
  • Store your shower items like shampoo, soap, etc. outside of the shower
  • Use all-purpose cleaner weekly
  • Wipe all wet areas dry
  • Use glass cleaner for the bathroom mirrors and windows

The above tips will make a big difference in helping to keep your bathroom mold-free. Preventing the growth of mold is the best method, as it saves money and potential health effects. While a customer may not initially notice if the floors or clean, they will more often than not notice if the floors are dirty. With dirty floors, customers may assume your business is negligent or sloppy, even if that is not the case. To avoid any misjudgments, it is best to ensure the floors are cleaned regularly.

Safety

Unkempt floors can be a major liability for a business. If floors are cleaned regularly, there is less of a chance a customer or employee will slip and fall and potentially have a serious injury. Any buildup of grime, oil, or any other substance can lead to potentially hazardous conditions in the workplace. If there is a potential danger with the floor, and they need to be replaced, it can be an extremely expensive endeavor. With regular floor cleaning, you can be confident that anyone who enters the building will be in a safe environment and extend the lifetime of your flooring.

Employee Productivity

Oftentimes, employees will improve their workplace performance when in a clean environment.  Workers are motivated by a professional workspace and it will enhance their overall work experience. In addition, clean floors will likely persuade employees to strive to maintain this level of cleanliness.

Overall Health and Wellness

A clean floor will promote general health for everyone inside the building. There is often germ and dirt buildup on the floors, leading to potential and unforeseen health consequences. With a reduction of grime, dirt, or any other allergens in the building, it is possible employees will take fewer sick days. To ensure people are healthy and happy, it is best to clean the floors before this becomes a possibility.

Tips for Protecting Yourself from Coronavirus Disease

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Together, we can play a big role in stopping the spread of this virus.

There is currently no vaccine available to prevent COVID-19, otherwise known as coronavirus disease 2019. As such the most prudent way to avoid the disease is to avoid exposure to the virus. With the rapid spread of illness, it is becoming increasingly important for everyone to take this virus seriously. In South Florida, more and more cases have been documented and projections point to the continual spread.

So, what can you do to protect yourself and your loved ones from the coronavirus disease? First, it is important to understand that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes that the virus is being spread from person-to-person in two potential ways:

  1. Respiratory droplets that are produced when an infected person sneezes or coughs
  2. Close contact between people (within about 6 feet of one another)

If the respiratory droplets of an infected individual land on the noses or in the mouths of others, they can be inhaled into the lungs and further spread the disease. It is extremely important that all South Florida residents understand the risks involved.

Taking proactive measures to protect yourself is essential. The CDC recommends doing the following:

  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Be particularly mindful of washing when you have been in any public places as well as after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
  • If unable to wash with soap and water, use hand sanitizer that has at least 60 percent alcohol
  • Avoid touching your face as much as possible and immediately wash hands if you have done so
  • Do not come in close contact with anyone who is sick
  • Practice social distancing as much as possible

In addition to protecting yourself, it is important to also think about protecting those around you. Follow these important steps to do so:

  • If sick, please stay home
  • If sneezing or coughing, use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth or the inside of your elbow if a tissue is not available
  • Dispose of all used tissues in the trash
  • Immediately (and properly) wash your hands after coughing or sneezing
  • Wear a facemask if you are sick when around other people
  • Disinfect and clear surfaces that are touched frequently
  • Clean any and all dirty surfaces

Together, we can play a big role in stopping the spread of this virus. As always, SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County is here for you!

The Benefits of Working with a Local Business

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

No matter where you live, it is always nice to support the businesses in your community.

SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County may be a franchise of large corporation, but we are truly a local business and staple in our community. We have had the same name and the same owners for the past 30 years. In fact, we are the only restoration company in Palm Beach County who can make that claim. So, what is it about being a local business? Why are people so inclined to spend their money with the locals?

There are a lot of advantages linked to working with local businesses. The last several years terms like “buy local” and “locally sourced” have grown tremendously in popularity. People like to feel connected to one another and that includes businesses. When a community leans on each other and utilizes each other for their day-to-day needs, everyone wins. As such, people are inclined to work with local businesses by nature.

The following are some of the most notable benefits of working with a local business:

  1. Lower costs: as local companies are typically less expensive than their corporate competitors
  2. Higher quality: community members care about taking care of one another
  3. A chance to connect: walking into a local business means familiar faces and new friends ready to connect with
  4. In-person expertise: there is something special and valuable in speaking with a professional face-to-face as opposed to turning to Google for an answer
  5. Mutually beneficial: local businesses tend to send each other business, furthering the cycle of buying local

No matter where you live, it is always nice to support the businesses in your community. Seeing a friendly face at a store gives you the comfort of knowing that your money is being spent on something worthwhile. At SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County, we are incredibly proud to be a part of our community. We shop local whenever possible and we love seeing our neighbors all over the county!

Avoiding Home Property Damage in the New Year

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

January is a prime time to focus your efforts on keeping your home and property safe.

Property damage strikes a home for many different reasons and often at unexpected times. With the New Year just beginning, it is common to start making resolutions that will serve to improve yourself and those around you. But what about making resolutions for your home? A person’s home is where they spend the majority of their time and, for that reason, home improvement should be at the top of your list when it comes to bettering yourself this year.

January is a prime time to focus your efforts on keeping your home and property safe. While damage caused by water, fire, and mold is unavoidable at times, taking specific steps to keep things in tiptop shape will help tremendously.

Consider getting the following home improvement action items done this month:

  • Go over your home emergency plan and make any necessary updates and adjustments
  • Take stock of your home’s safety equipment, ensuring that items like flashlights, first-aid kits, and backup medicine and food are in good condition
  • Find the water supply line in your house and be sure that you know how to turn it off in the event of an emergency
  • Walk your home to check on all of your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors batteries

While these tasks may seem menial, they are extremely important to do. In addition to the above items, your January resolutions should focus on one home improvement that you have been meaning to accomplish. Whether that means getting the roof cleaned or redoing a bathroom, concentrating on one specific task will help to get it done.

At SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County we are looking forward to a wonderful 2020 year! The New Year means new opportunities to serve our community and all of its water, fire, and mold damage needs. Contact our office today to speak with our residential and commercial restoration specialists.

How To Stop Mold Growth in Your Garage

12/5/2019 (Permalink)

Garages are typically hot, unventilated, and dark, making them a prime option for mold growth.

With consistent rainstorms all year round, Florida residents are used to weathering the elements day in and day out. As a homeowner, it is important to take measures to protect your home’s interior and exterior from water damage. Why? Well, when left unprotected, water damage can quickly turn into mold damage and create an even bigger problem to deal with. Unfortunately, the garage is a hotspot for potential mold growth. The combination of heat, moisture, and darkness creates the perfect environment for mildew to thrive.

Garages in Florida are extremely common. From extra storage to a place to park cars, having a garage is a luxury and should be cared for accordingly. With this in mind, follow these tips to try to prevent mold from growing in your garage:

  1. Keep the garage ventilated with fresh air when possible
  2. Avoid storing cardboard boxes in the garage
  3. Consider keeping a dehumidifier in the garage
  4. Check the seal on the garage door to confirm that no water is coming through the bottom
  5. Do not store any wet items in the garage
  6. Try to open the garage during sunlight each day
  7. If a heavy storm comes, remove standing water as quickly as possible afterwards
  8. Maintain shrubbery that is in close proximity to the garage

We also recommend storing your items on shelves instead of on the garage floor to help keep items dry and mold-free. Garages are typically hot, unventilated, and dark, making them a prime option for mold growth. As such, it is important to take the above measures to keep your garage clean and free of any mildew. If you do notice mold damage in your garage, we are here to help. Contact SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County today to speak with one of our mold damage experts.

Signs of a Mold Issue in Your Home

8/21/2019 (Permalink)

Recognizing the presence of mold is imperative to reducing the damage that it can cause.

Mold growth is one of those pesky house issues that every homeowner hopes to avoid. South Florida homes and excess water often go hand-in-hand. Between the humidity and the frequent rainstorms, houses are exposed to moisture regularly and that can lead to mold growth. If identified quickly, mold can be dealt with little hassle. However, if mold growth is not detected for a long period of time the outcome can be costly and challenging.

Bathrooms and kitchens are most common culprits for mildew presence. The moisture and dampness in those areas create an atmosphere for mold to thrive. In addition, places like the laundry room and the garage are also hotspots for mold to grow. Recognizing the presence of mold is imperative to reducing the damage that it can cause. The following are some of the most common signs of a mold issue in your home:

  • The paint on the walls starts to bubble
  • Water damage is left untreated
  • Leaks in sinks or even washing machines
  • Asthma starts flaring up while in the home
  • Visible mold that appears as dirt on walls or ceilings
  • Mold underneath rugs or carpeting
  • Strange odor in your home
  • Eyes start to sting or become watery while in the home
  • The exhaust fan in the bathroom needs to be replaced
  • The insulation in your attic starts to feel lumpy

No matter which of the above signs are recognized in your home, it is critical to act right away. Delaying dealing with mold growth can leads to all kinds of issues for both the house and its occupants. This is the 8th year that Santa and his helpers have brought the Christmas spirit to the school.

On December 19, 2018, a group of local businesses will join forces to provide holiday gift bags to almost 400 children that attend Lake Park Elementary School, a Title 1 school where 96% of the students receive free or reduced lunches.

Lesser Lesser Landy & Smith, Valley National Bank, and SERVPRO of North Palm Beach County will arrive at the school with Santa and his helpers to give holiday gift bags to all the students enrolled in the school.  The holiday gift bags will include a blanket, stuffed animal, toiletries, with art supplies donated by the Lake Park non-profit Kelsey Cares, and fresh fruit donated by Duffy’s.

“It’s about local businesses working together as a team to help those less fortunate in our community during the holidays, “said Lesser Lesser Landy & Smith Managing Partner Gary S. Lesser. “I’m glad we can be part of this team helping hundreds of families to have a happier holiday season.”

Expectations for Professional Mold Removal

8/17/2018 (Permalink)

Unlike some of our competitors, our highly trained mold remediation specialists are here to quickly restore your property.

Spreading throughout a residential or commercial property in as little as 48 hours, mold infestations are something that must be taken seriously. It is important to understand that since mold spores live everywhere, both indoors and outdoors, any company claiming the ability to remove all mold from a building is being dishonest. The reality is that microscopic mold spores occur naturally and only become an issue in high quantity. The problem in the mold remediation industry is that far too many companies make false claims and are actually lacking the skills, experience, and equipment to so that job the right way.

Mold removal is a specialized skill that requires licensing to do the job effectively, safely, and with the proper restoration techniques. The following are important qualities to look for when you are hiring a professional mold removal and restoration company:

  • An Applied Microbial Remediation Specialist should be on the job
  • An inspection and assessment should be done to determine mold damage
  • Actions should be taken to contain the mold and prevent spreading (the best method is using negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area)
  • Air filtration should be used
  • Protective safety gear should be worn at all times when dealing with mold projects – look out for things like face masks, gloves, or even a full suit if the mold issue is very large
  • Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments will be utilized
  • All contents in the contaminated areas should be cleaned properly to not only disinfect but to also remove odors
  • Restoration should take place last to restore affected areas and repair damage

SERVPRO is proud to offer our mold damage repair and restoration services at a reasonable cost. Unlike some of our competitors, our highly trained mold remediation specialists are here to quickly restore your property. Call us today to learn more!
